When we take the time to stop and look at all the beauty around us, the things we see every day are pretty amazing.  Whether it be an old building, a scene I'd like to remember, or just a whimsical thought I'd like to portray, painting is my way of composing a visual memory.  My experience with painting started at an early age with an amazing teacher in grade school who was passionate about art.  She let me spend an inordinate amount of time on art projects and introduced me to watercolor.  I went on to do a lot of ink drawing and charcoal portrait work and then started painting in oil after college.  As a self taught artist, or I should say, forever learning artist, I find I learn something new every time I pick up a paint brush.  Whether viewing or painting an art piece, I hope I demonstrate some of the same passion my 6th grade teacher impressed upon me.  I now paint in both watercolor and oil in the beautiful state of Idaho overlooking the magnificent Snake River.

"Have fun with your art and experiment. Don't feel as though you should be painting like anyone else. As far as I'm concerned, there is no right way or wrong way to paint, there's just your way.  Enjoy it!"

A Great Work of Art

                                  by Bev Stone copyright 2001

I painted a picture at my school

with vibrant shades of red and blue.

It started out with clouds in the sky

and a house with a tree growing nearby.

I was almost finished but I was in a rush

when I reached over to pick up my brush.

My brush that was filled with the color red

nearly fell from my hand as it bumped my head.

The collision bounced my brush around,

causing gobs of red paint to fall in a mound.

I stared at my art wondering what to do

when I decided to paint in a flower or two.

I dabbled the paint here and there,

with a truly amazing artistic flair!

But when I was finished all I could see

were some flowers that were nearly as tall as the tree!

So I turned my paper upside down

and watched as the paint dripped toward the ground.

The colors blended all over the place,

rearranging the paint at a deliberate pace.

I turned the paper without a sound,

watching the colors swirl round and round.

The red and yellow, green and blue,

combined to make a beautiful hue.

I stopped and looked at what I had done

and realized I was having fun!

The painting that I had at the start,

was boring compared to this great work of art!

So I proudly hung it for all to see -

no longer resembling a house and a tree.

And when I came into class the next day,

I noticed my painting was on display.

Next to it hung a blue ribbon of size,

with letters that read the words - FIRST PRIZE!
